The essentials

What Non-Dom status means

Domicile is distinct from residence. You can be tax resident in Cyprus while remaining non-domiciled - and non-doms are exempt from the Special Defence Contribution (SDC) on dividends, interest and rental income.

In practice a qualifying non-dom pays no Cyprus tax on dividends or interest, from Cyprus or abroad, for up to 17 years - extendable thereafter under an alternative arrangement. Unlike the UK and Malta, Cyprus does not use a remittance basis, so there is no need to keep money offshore.

The advantages

Why Cyprus non-doms benefit

Dividends & GESY

Exempt from income tax and SDC; only the GESY health contribution of 2.65% applies, capped at €4,770/year.

Interest, exempt

Free of Cyprus income tax and SDC for non-dom residents.

Up to 17 years - extendable

For up to 17 of any 20 years, with an option to continue thereafter.

No inheritance or wealth tax

Cyprus levies no inheritance, gift or wealth tax.

The 60-day route

Tax residency with as little as 60 days a year, if conditions are met.

Treaty network

An extensive double-tax treaty network protecting cross-border income.

Transparency & your residence

A single, compliant tax home

Cyprus participates fully in the OECD Common Reporting Standard (CRS) and FATCA. Financial institutions report account information to the jurisdiction where the account holder is tax resident.

When Cyprus is your genuine and sole place of tax residence, your affairs are reported and assessed in one place: Cyprus. The advantage is not secrecy but simplicity and certainty - a single, compliant tax home in an EU member state, backed by an extensive treaty network. Real substance is what makes the benefits robust and defensible.

Overview

Tax residency in 60 days

Most countries require 183 days of presence. Cyprus offers an alternative 60-day route for the internationally mobile who aren't tax resident anywhere else - the gateway to Non-Dom status with a light physical footprint.

The test

The five conditions

1

At least 60 days in Cyprus

A minimum of 60 days during the tax year.

2

Not 183+ days elsewhere

No more than 183 days, in aggregate, in any one other country.

3

Not tax resident elsewhere

Not considered tax resident in any other single state that year.

4

Cyprus economic ties

Business, employment or an office in a Cyprus company - maintained through the year.

5

A permanent home in Cyprus

A permanent residence, owned or rented, for the full year.

All five must be satisfied. If your Cyprus ties end mid-year, eligibility for that year is lost.
